When you have a well-established landscape or garden, the most important action is providing water to your vegetation. We have plenty of rain in the Pacific Northwest, but droughts are all too common once it stops for the summer.
A landscaping problem results in the complexities of installing a proper irrigation system. Your goal is to have a well-designed watering system that does not waste water. You need the right amount of water for flowers, plants, and shrubs without overwatering, underwatering, or allowing water to sit on top of dry, brittle soil that eventually flows away from the plants.
It’s a good idea to get a consultation from a professional irrigation system contractor. It doesn’t take much time for us to look at your watering problems and give a quick and affordable solution. Our guidance will save you a lot of money on your water bill while we irrigate your landscaping and garden effectively. Healthy landscaping requires proper irrigation.
When you have a proper irrigation system, you’ll notice your plants flourish and thrive with plump fruit, healthy vegetables, lush, colorful flowers, and shrubs. No more waiting and wondering why your plants won’t grow. It’s because they lack a healthy amount of water.
Throwing a hose on the lawn is what most people do. Do you really have time to stand around and water your landscaping? Unfortunately, it’s the most ineffective way to water your plants. Plus, it’s incredibly wasteful. It’s not that it’s wrong. It might be the perfect option for some, but there might be another option that is better for your situation.
When you call Ivan’s Landscaping & Construction, we will help you find an irrigation solution that works best for you. We can even design an irrigation system customizable to your lawn and garden. If you live in Snohomish County, you know every backyard is different, with hills and valleys, slopes, and slanting. Regardless of the irregularities of your property, we’ll get your plants watered properly. (425) 239-1339

Irrigation Systems – Design, Irrigation, Troubleshooting
First, let’s go over the different types of irrigation, and then we can talk about which is right for you. There is a lot to consider when designing irrigation systems. You need to measure how water flows through pipes and hoses and evaluate how that water travels among the landscape.
Sprinkler Design
To design a sprinkler system, you need to know your water pressure. If the pressure is too low, it will not be sufficient for watering large areas. Conversely, if the pressure is too high, you risk damaging your irrigation pipes and sprinklers by overpressurizing them.
Sprinkler design depends on the size of the area and its slope. The higher the slope, the greater the distance between irrigated areas (and thus more pipe required), then higher pipe pressures are needed to move water uphill. For example, A 1/2-inch nozzle operating at 40 psi is okay for flat ground but insufficient if there is a steep slope. If you have dense turfgrass, large diameter piping may be necessary to make up for friction losses when moving water uphill along a long run of pipe.
Lawn Sprinklers make your watering system much more efficient. A few points to consider are the several different types to use and alternate for different watering effects.
Lawn Sprinkler System
- Spray heads – These are the most common type of irrigation heads, and they come in various sizes and shapes. You can find them on sprinkler systems with rotary heads or pop-up heads that water a circular area.
- Rotary heads look like large sprinklers, with nozzles that rotate in a full circle over your lawn or garden. These styles are great for watering large areas quickly and evenly but may not be suitable for watering small plants like vegetables because they don’t target individual plants very well.
- Pop-up/Lawn Sprinkler System – These systems typically consist of a network of underground pipes surrounded by an open trench with valves at each end so you can turn them on or off as needed. When it rains heavily enough to flood your yard or garden (or when there isn’t any rain), these valves will close automatically, so no water spills out into your basement! This system works best when
Drip Irrigation System
A drip irrigation system is probably the most efficient type of irrigation system. This method has several benefits for both homeowners and the environment, which include:
- Drip systems are more efficient because they deliver water only where needed. There is little or no runoff when installed correctly because air-filled emitters distribute water evenly in the soil profile.
- They adapt to any size yard, from small gardens to large landscapes, even if you have poor soil or high rainfall amounts. A well-designed drip system will not only irrigate your plants but also help retain moisture and nutrients in their roots and prevent salt buildup on sidewalks or driveways due to heavy rains.
Rain Catchment Drip Irrigation
Rain catchment drip irrigation systems are ideal for plants that need a lot of water, but you don’t have room to install a whole system. If you have a small yard or minimal space, this is your best option.
The basic principle is simple: rainwater collects in gutters that lead into storage tanks where it’s stored until needed by your home garden or lawn. When needed, it pumps through drip lines (similar to the drip lines used with common sprinkler systems) that feed directly into the soil around your plants’ roots with dripper heads located along each line’s length. The primary benefit here is that rainwater comes from many different sources – such as roof runoff – so it doesn’t need any hookup with municipal water supply before being delivered directly onto your property. The best part is that you are using pure rainwater to water your plants and there is no waste.
If you have any of these systems and they are in need of repair, we repair all types of water irrigation systems. Give us a call and ask any questions. We are here to help install, repair and troubleshoot your landscape and garden irrigation systems! Call Ivan’s Landscaping & Construction today!
